The last few years have seen an increase in remote working, with many companies choosing to keep fully remote or hybrid working schemes in place post-lockdown. There are many benefits to working from home although, as with anything, there are also some downfalls.
Working from home provides an easier option for many. There is less time spent commuting and therefore less risk of employees arriving late due to traffic or transport issues and there is also less stress involved when starting the day.
Commuting is a difficult part of some people’s lives so removing this issue can lead to better productivity all round. However, for some, there is a lack of suitable areas to work from at home, which leaves them needing to work from co-working spaces nearby, therefore having to commute anyway.
Remote working also reduces the need for office space. If the majority of your team prefers working from home, you may find it easier to let a much smaller office area for those who wish to come in or for when working in the office is necessary.
This can be more cost effective for your business but also leaves you with limited space for when you need it for meetings, conferences or other events.
Some believe that working from home increases motivation and productivity, employees may be more comfortable at home surrounded by home comforts and with access to their personal belongings. However, this means there may also be more room for distraction or for them to get tied up with household tasks during work hours.
Remote working may also pose a security risk as employees must have access to all necessary data and information. Giving them access via their personal computers means sensitive information must exist outside of the workplace.
This is more of an issue when computers and other devices used are personal items not provided by the workplace, as it is difficult to install and use security software on people’s personal devices.
