1. Poor communication

Communication is key to successful remote working, or staff can easily feel left out of the loop. Misunderstandings and resentment can also build up if channels of communication are not kept open. Establish which methods you expect team members to communicate by, e.g., phone, video, email, and how often they should be checked.

2. Inadequate technology

If the company is running an outdated or poorly managed IT system, it is taking huge risks with both productivity and security. Slow cumbersome programs will hinder the progress and accuracy of even the most diligent of workers. Old and poorly maintained IT is also more vulnerable to hacking and malware attacks.

3. Not fostering a good team morale

In an office, it is usually easier to have those informal water cooler moments to bond with colleagues, or iron out minor problems. When working remotely, a little more effort is needed to create a well-motivated team.

Pre-schedule meetings at least once a week with the whole team, and have a window available for one-to-one discussions with employees for a general chat about how they are getting on. This will nip any potential problems in the bud, and help you build a rapport with individual team members.
